Angel
Hatch Year 1999
Angel, as a fledgling was found
near Grantsburg, Wisconsin in Burnett County. She had a fractured humerus in
her left wing which had misaligned as it healed improperly.
According to the person who found
her, Angel was on the ground close to an eagle nest of which she may
have fledged from, and was unable to fly due to her crooked wing.
Angel possibly survived by eating
dead young herons and fish that had fallen out of nearby nests from a
great blue heron rookery. She was admitted to the U of M Raptor
Center by the Wisconsin DNR on 7/14/1999. Surgery and realignment of her
left humerus was successful, yet her damaged muscles were not repairable
for her to regain the ability to sustain flight.
Due to her permanent disability,
Angel has never flown free in the wild and has been with humans most of
her young life which makes her somewhat imprinted to humans. She
shows little fear of people and can get aggressive during the nesting
season.
When Angel was transferred to the
National Eagle Center in March of 2000, a naming contest was held for
the eagles at local schools. Angel received her name from a 4th
grade student attending St. Felix school in Wabasha MN.
