Columbia
Hatch Year 2001
Columbia was found in a National
Refuge near Dunbar, Wisconsin in Marinnette County.
She had incurred a fracture close to her
shoulder. Unfortunately,
physical therapy was unable to rehabilitate her to fly and she arrived
at the National Eagle Center in 2003.
In August of 2003 she
received the honor of Being dedicated to the crew of the Columbia space
mission. The pilot, Commander McCool is especially fond of eagles.
Columbia was struck by a vehicle
(an electrical contractors van) after she took off from a road kill deer
upon which she was feeding. Initially, she was admitted to Bay
Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay WI, then was transferred to the U
of M Raptor Center on 1/3/2002.
She was found to have an open
fracture close to her right shoulder, and a blood lead level of 0.27ppm.
After surgery and physical therapy failed to regain her ability to fly,
Columbia was transferred to the National Eagle Center in January of
2003.
In August 2003, upon the sixth
month anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s tragedy, Columbia
the Eagle was named and dedicated to the crew of the shuttle.
Shuttle pilot Commander Willie McCool had worked with Nation Eagle
Center Program Director MaryBeth Garrigan in 1997 conducting education
presentations. Commander McCool was an Eagle Scout and had a love
of eagles.
