Winter 2007-2008
The NEC's 2008 Annual Golden
Eagle Survey Count was on Jan. 19, 2008. The 2007 count was 41 golden
eagles for the day and 51 for the week, up from 2006's 23 for the day and
29 for the week.
2008 results are being tallied now!
On or around March 14:
- Red Wing (Colville Park) 15

- Wabasha 24
- Alma 15

- Lock and Dam 5A 5
Some eagles are flying,
however most are roosting.
On or around February 25:

Water is frozen due to power plant shut-down

There are signs of the migration starting and we should be seeing migrating eagles next week.

WOW! What a great cold snap!!
Unfortunately, so cold and long that it pushed many Eagles farther South,
and the numbers drastically went down.
Warmer weather will bring them back.
13 Trumpeter Swans visible in Wabasha from the National Eagle Center along
with Common Mergansers and
Common Goldeneyes. A Barrows Goldeneye was seen near the Geological
Marker on February 2.

The River has really opened up,
all the way to Alma. In fact, this has really spread the Eagles out,
with more warm weather on the way.
Thousands of Common Goldeneyes and
Common Mergansers are being seen at Reads Landing as well.

The river has finally opened up so we now have
a large number of eagles in Wabasha!!
There are also large numbers of Common Goldeneyes and Common Mergansers at Reads
Landing, in addition to 7 Tundra Swans, 2 Canvasbacks and Lesser Scaup.
With more ice than usual for this time of the year,
eagle numbers should increase as migration continues and open water comes back.
On December 4, 2007 over 120 eagles were spotted on the ice and
trees of the Read’s Landing area, up river from Wabasha.

More ice than usual for this time of the year, Eagle numbers should increase as migration continues and open water comes back.
The National Eagle Center’s involvement in bald eagles surveys have
been done as a part of EagleWatch since 1989. A Golden Eagle survey
coordinated by National Eagle Center Program Specialist Scott Mehus is
now in its 4th year.

Scott also reported 328 mostly adult bald eagles, 170
red-tailed hawks, 31 rough-legged hawks, and 20 kestrels along the
routes well.
