2008 Wintering
Golden Eagle Survey
of the Bluffs and Coulee Region
of the Upper Mississippi River Watershed
The
survey included:
- 67 Observers
- 26 Routes
- 16 Routes in WI
- 9 Routes in MN
- 1 Route in Iowa
- 37 Golden Eagles Count Day
January 19, 2008
- 23 Golden Eagles Count Week
(Most of these routes were away from the core area or in areas where
none were seen 1-19-08)
- 60 Golden Eagles for the 2008
Wintering Golden Eagle Survey of the Bluffs and Coulee Region of the
Upper Mississippi River Watershed
The results are:
- 31 Golden Eagles in WI on the
count day
- 6 Golden Eagles in MN on the count day
- 17 Golden Eagles in WI in the count week
- 6 Golden Eagles in MN in the count week
Previous year's results were:
- The 2007 Survey had 47 observers and tallied 51 Golden's.
- The 2006 Survey had 48 observers and tallied 29 Golden's.
- The 2005Survey had 25 observers and tallied 21 Golden's.
Other data from the 2008 survey:
- 390 Bald Eagles!! Not all separated Adults from Immatures, but from
those that did we found 86% were adults and 14% Immatures.
- 112 Red-tailed Hawks
- 18 Rough-legged Hawks
Also seen were several Northern
Shrikes, American Kestrels, Sharp-skinned Hawks, and 1 Red-shouldered
Hawk.
Also, several interactions between Adult Golden's and Non-adult
Golden's, two separate observations of Golden's working together
chasing Fox squirrels, an Immature Golden catching a Fox Squirrel only
to have it be stolen by two Adult Bald Eagles, several observations of
Adult pairs of Golden's sitting side by side, some Golden's doing some
roller coaster dives, and two albino White-tailed deer bucks.
