Meet Onyx:
Our American Kestrel Ambassador
In February of 2026, Onyx arrived at the National Eagle Center as our 2nd non-eagle, and only American Kestrel resident. He is a representative of North America’s smallest falcon species!
He was admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center with some sort of trauma, he did not have all his flight feathers grown in, and he only weighed 41 grams. So, it is believed he fell out of his nest at a very young age. After being admitted into the center, they discovered he had neurological issues including impaired balance and improper flight. Soon he was transferred to Tamarack Wildlife Center where it was discovered that he had also been imprinted.
Onyx may be the smallest addition to the National Eagle Center ambassador team, but his impact is huge. He teaches us the importance of respecting wildlife and ensuring that if we find an injured animal, we get them proper and professional care as soon as possible.
Onyx lives off-display in a private mew, but is a featured highlight of our Behind the Scenes experiences where our guests meet him up-close!
